Pope Francis has asked for this worldwide listening exercise to prepare for a Synod of Bishops in Rome in 2023. We have been invited to gather as a parish in small group meetings to discuss some key questions with each other. The responses will go forward to the Synod in Rome and will also be used in our own diocese and parish, as part of a pastoral plan of renewal.

Pope Francis has chosen three words as the theme of the Synod: Communion, Participation, Mission and the diocese has put together ten questions to help us explore these words and this theme.

We invite you to join us as much as you can. We will use two of the 10 questions to set the ball rolling every week, but each time there will be space to explore whatever those present want to explore. The weekly plan is as follows:

WeekTopic / Question
1How welcoming is our parish? How well do we communicate?
2How well does the Church’s liturgy inspire deeper encounter with the risen Lord? How well do we hand on the Faith?
3How well do we understand and participate in the mission of the Church? How well do we work as a team in our parish?
4How well do we engage with the wider world? How good is our relationship with other Christian traditions?
5How open are we to the will of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
6Reflecting on listening to one another and our concerns. How can we become a listening Church more fully?

Please consider others who might not know about these gatherings and encourage them to join us, or to use another way to engage and be heard.

The theme of listening is integral to the synodal discussions, so please join in − so we can share and listen to each other as we are walking together as the people of God. More details will be updated on this page as we go on.
